For the past eight years, I've been building WordPress plugins. Nine of them, with a combined 115,000+ active installs. But this year, I shipped something different: SurePrompts — my first SaaS product.
Why SaaS after plugins?
WordPress plugins taught me how to build software people use. But the business model has limitations. Free plugins on wordpress.org generate zero revenue unless you layer on a premium version, and the conversion rates are brutal — typically 1-3% of free users upgrade.
I wanted to build something with a more direct value exchange. SaaS felt like the natural next step.
What SurePrompts does
SurePrompts helps you craft production-quality AI prompts in under 60 seconds. No signup needed — you can start immediately.
Here's the problem it solves: most people are terrible at writing prompts for ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools. They write vague instructions and get vague results. Then they blame the AI.
SurePrompts gives you:
- 320+ pre-built templates organized by use case
- A guided prompt builder that asks the right questions
- Output that works across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others
- No signup friction — just open it and start
What I learned building a SaaS vs. a plugin
The biggest difference is distribution. With WordPress plugins, you get free distribution through wordpress.org — people search for "table plugin" and find you. With SaaS, you have to earn every visitor.
The second difference is speed of iteration. With plugins, you submit an update to wordpress.org and wait for the review. With SaaS, you push code and it's live immediately. That faster feedback loop is addictive.
The third difference is the relationship with users. Plugin users often install your plugin, use it silently, and you never hear from them unless something breaks. SaaS users are more engaged — they have accounts, they come back, they give feedback.
Building in public
I've been sharing the entire journey on Twitter — the decisions, the metrics, the mistakes. Building in public has been a core part of how I approach new projects. It creates accountability, attracts early users, and forces you to think clearly about what you're building and why.
What's next
SurePrompts is live and growing. But I'm already thinking about the next product. The AI tooling space is moving incredibly fast, and there are problems that need solving — especially around how businesses optimize their content for AI search engines.
More on that soon.
